Maya Angelou's "On The Pulse of The Morning" inspires Season 3 Episode 11.

The title of Season 3, Episode 11 of Queen Sugar, "Your Passages Have Been Paid", is inspired by a line from Maya Angelou's 1993 presidential inauguration poem, "On The Pulse of The Morning".

This poem has taken many people to another well-known saying by the poet: "Your crown has already been paid for. You just have to put in on your head and wear it."

In the same vein, the land on which the Bordelons stand has already been paid for with the blood, sweat and tears of the enslaved. The land is theirs, and all they need now is to do whatever it takes to ensure they keep it.

See a short excerpt from Maya Angelou's poem below:

On The Pulse of The Morning

A Rock, A River, A Tree
Hosts to species long since departed,
Marked the mastodon,
The dinosaur, who left dry tokens
Of their sojourn here
On our planet floor,
Any broad alarm of their hastening doom
Is lost in the gloom of dust and ages.

But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.

I will give you no more hiding place down here.

You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness,
Have lain too long
Face down in ignorance.
